This is Really Happening

The bicycle show that always seemed to be looming months in advance is happening this weekend in Madison. I have to finish building my furnishings for the booth, build up a bicycle from the ground up (Hiawatha Cyclery will be building the wheels for me at least), get the postcards printed, pick up t-shirts– but it all seems to be coming together at last.  Oh, and did I mention that I’m moving to Oregon in a week?

This isn’t my first show, but it is the first time I’ve shown solo in my own booth. Preparing for the show booth feels a lot like writing the website, which is still ongoing– you have to make something in your own image, so to speak. As a recovering art student, this transposition of who I am into other media and venues is something that I take very seriously. Hopefully I have something to show for this habit this weekend.

Stephen’s New Roamer

Back home from a round trip to Colorado Springs for a Spectrum powdercoat on this classically-styled 650b Roamer.  A box of fancy parts, including a full Campy kit and Paul Racer brakes, awaits in a backroom over at Freewheel Bike.  Should see pics of the built up bicycle soon.  Heck, might even see the completed piece at the Heartland Velo Show (eep!) next weekend.

El Burro in it’s Natural Environment

Hopefully we all get here at least once this summer.  Mike’s El Burro, photographed in evening repose.

New Down Tube Logo Option

Amanda Clark submitted this cursive design for her new Cappy.  I think it’s great, and she offered to let others benefit from it.  This script will be an option on future Capricorn frames with stenciled logos.

August 27th and 28th, Madison

The Heartland Velo Handbuilt Bicycle Show is really starting to gain steam and the pressure’s suddenly on to have the booth ready to go and also our apartment packed up by the end of the month. But I’m really looking forward to the show, which is turning out to also be a reunion of sorts for me. Matthew Larsen, journeyman wheelbuilder and mechanic extraordinaire, has a booth. He and I worked together at a now defunct bike shop in Kenosha almost 15 years ago. John Sotherland, who practically taught me everything I know about silver-brazing and one of the most praticed builders you could ever meet, will also be there. And of course Waterford, my alma mater, so-to-speak, will probably have the biggest booth and some fantastic paint jobs.

The Heartland Velo Show is August 27th and 28th at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison.  Please visit their website for location and exhibitor info.
